Position Summary
This position works independently and is responsible for the routine and nonroutine care and maintenance of all university-maintained heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration mechanical equipment in accordance with trade practices and in compliance with applicable codes. Possess all skills and competencies of a HVACR Mechanic II.
This position is identified as Essential Staff, responsible for maintaining the core functions and operations of the university, especially during emergencies, crises, or situations that require continuity of essential services. This position is required to be on-call F-Th as set by a calendar rotation.

Minimum Required Education and Experience
Highschool diploma or GED AND Minimum of Five (5) years specific trade AND technical experience with progressive independent responsibilities in installations, repairs, and troubleshooting in a commercial environment AND Two (2) approved Certifications OR Two (2) Technical Training Courses targeted to the specific trade.
Preferred Education and Experience
Associate degree or vocational/technical degree AND Three (3) years specific trade and technical experience with progressive independent responsibilities in installations, repairs, and troubleshooting in a commercial environment.
Required Other Training, Certifications, or Licensing
Must possess a valid NC Driver's License and be insurable by the university's carrier AND within 12-months of employment earn an EPA CFC Universal Section 608 certification.
Job Duties
- The HVACR Mechanic I is responsible for nonroutine maintenance of all university-maintained heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration mechanical equipment. Tasks include, but not limited to; replacing bearings and seals on centrifugal pumps, changing bearings on fan systems, motors, and pump shafts.
- The HVACR Mechanic I is responsible for routine care and maintenance of all university-maintained heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration mechanical equipment. Tasks include, but not limited to; monitoring, servicing, problem diagnostics, equipment troubleshooting, simulation testing, accurate reporting, and mechanical room cleanliness.
- The HVACR Mechanic I is responsible for completing assigned work orders and accurately reporting results.
- The HVACR Mechanic I has oversight of onsite contractors including granting access to student rooms, monitoring and reporting service interruptions, and directing work.
