Position Description
This position is responsible for the planning and organizing of work of journeyperson in an assigned trade, the development of material and labor estimates for proposed work, as well as the assigned trade shop budget, inventories, procedures and policies. Work is primarily evaluated for effective use of resources, accomplishment of assigned projects, and adherence to trade standards.

About the Department and/or College
Major/Essential Functions
Leadership, Supervision & Accountability
- Serves as the lead HVAC authority for assigned facilities, supervising and directing HVAC trades staff.
- Independently prioritizes, assigns, and schedules work based on safety risk, system criticality, and operational impact.
- Provides technical direction, mentoring, and performance oversight to ensure work meets standards and timelines.
- Acts as the escalation point for complex system issues and workforce coordination.
- Exercises independent authority over HVAC system operations and configuration.
- Directs and approves adjustments to system set points, zoning, exterior lockouts, dampers, fire dampers, valves, actuators, and variable frequency drives.
- Oversees system performance across buildings and zones, balancing occupant needs, equipment protection, and energy efficiency.
- Directs operation and optimization of hydronic systems, including chilled water, hot water, steam systems, and their integration with air handlers and building automation systems.
- Coordinates HVAC operations across interconnected building and utility systems to ensure continuity of service, system reliability, and safe operation.
- Leads diagnosis and resolution of complex HVAC and electrical system failures.
- Determines repair strategies, directs corrective actions, and approves component replacement for HVAC equipment, controls, pumps, motors, valves, piping, and associated electrical systems.
- Ensures system communication and operational integrity between HVAC equipment and control systems.
- Leads HVAC-related projects including equipment replacement, system upgrades, and energy-efficiency improvements.
- Directs contractors and vendors, reviews work for compliance, and coordinates procurement and warranty activities.
- Serves as the HVAC incident lead during alarms, freeze events, power interruptions, inspections, and emergency response, coordinating with Emergency Maintenance, fire marshals, and inspectors.
Required Qualifications
Proficiency in written and mathematical skills as may be reflected in the completion of high school or equivalent. Three years experience as a licensed journeyperson in the assigned trade; or six years experience in designated trade. Job-related vocational training and other education may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis. Thorough knowledge of the standard tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices of the assigned trade.
Preferred Qualifications
- EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification.
- Experience in higher education, healthcare, or large multi-building campus environments.
- Experience coordinating HVAC work with fire marshals, inspectors, and emergency response teams.
- Knowledge of energy-efficient system upgrades and modern HVAC technologies.
- Strong documentation skills and experience training and mentoring trades staff.
Pay Range
$31.35 - $40.77 - $50.14
